How DOCSIS Protocol Solves Asymmetric Bandwidth Issue in Cable Network

چکیده
Since the high bandwidth and popular usage are the characteristics of cable network, it becomes one of the main solutions for residential network. The cable network is a kind of asymmetric bandwidth architecture, which generates certain performance issues. This article first discusses the issues stemmed from asymmetric bandwidth. It then briefly introduces Data over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) protocol, the most popular standard for cable network today. The rest of the article discusses the operations and mechanisms in DOCSIS protocol that solve those performance issues and other possible improvements in cable network.

Downstream Bandwidth Management for Emerging DOCSIS-based Networks
In this dissertation, we consider the downstream bandwidth management in the context of emerging DOCSIS-based cable networks. The latest DOCSIS 3.1 standard for cable access networks represents a significant change to cable networks. For downstream, the current 6 MHz channel size is replaced by a much larger 192 MHz channel which potentially can provide data rates up to 10 Gbps. Further, the cu...
متن کاملEffects of the Distinction between Long and Short Data Grants in DOCSIS Network
In this paper, we analyze the effects of the distinction between long and short data grants in the Data Over Cable Service Interface specifications (DOCSIS) protocol. According to DOCSIS specifications, the grants for a bandwidth request of a cable modem can be for either short or long data packets. The threshold value classifying a short and long data packet is a system operation parameter and...
متن کاملOn fairness and application performance of active queue management in broadband cable networks
We evaluate the performance of modern delay-based active queue management (AQM) algorithms in downstream DOCSIS 3.0 cable environments. Our simulation-based study involves scenarios that include tiered service levels and application workloads that include FTP, HTTP-based adaptive streaming (HAS), VoIP, and web traffic. Our results show that AQM maintains target queuing delays and consequently p...

This memo defines a portion of the Management Information Base (MIB) for use with network management protocols in the Internet community. In particular, it defines a basic set of managed objects for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)-based management of Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS)-compliant Cable Modems and Cable Modem Termination Systems. This memo obsoletes...
متن کاملOn the Performance Modelling and Optimisation of DOCSIS HFC Networks
The DOCSIS protocol defines the MAC and physical layer operations governing two-way transmission of voice, video and multimedia data over HFC cable networks, thus constituting a complex system with many interdependent parameters. This tutorial employs simulation and analytic methodologies for the performance modelling and optimisation of DOCSIS 1.1/2.0 HFC networks with particular focus on the ...
